Research team from Al-Quds University develops Smartphone application to detect Breast Cancer

A team of researchers from Alquds University has developed a Smartphone application that is able to detect breast cancer, marking a turning point in the efforts of early diagnosis of this fatal disease.

The main feature of this technology is that it enables females to discover Breast Cancer through pictures taken by mobile phones. The process can be repeated at all times without any significant damage; results can also be shown immediately.

“Experiments have been undertaken on mice. The results have been, to a great extent, positive, which encouraged application on females in a Bethlehem medical center”, said Dr. Zaydoun Salah, Head of Biology Department and researcher, Bard College.

The Smartphone new application will be available for use following the results of experiments. Females will be able to discover symptoms and consult specialized medical centers, where specimen will be taken to decide whether a tumor is benign or malignant.

Meanwhile, Dr. Imad AbuKishek, University President, congratulated the two researchers, Dr. Zaydoun Salah, and Mr. Yazeed Badareen, on their achievements so far, wishing them success in their experiments. Dr. AbuKishek noted that this discovery came as a direct result of the University’s strategy of investing in scientific research and innovative minds, through allocating needed facilities and resources for the benefit of the Palestinian community and humanity as a whole.

“According to the system, the temperature of the target body part is measured following the flow of blood and excessive metabolism, in addition to some external signs as swelling, redness, and shape of breast.

Statistics by Palestinian Ministry of Health for the year 2017 show that there are 83.8 cancer cases per 100000 lives in the West Bank; 52.5% of these are females, whereas 47.5 are males.

It is worth noting that Dr. Zaydoun holds a Ph D. degree in Cell and Molecular Biology and has published more than 43 researches as well as numerous chapters in scientific books. Mr. Yazeed Badareen is the director of the Department of Information and Communication, Al-Quds Bard College. He holds a master’s degree from the same college and two other international certificates from Microsoft and Google corporations.

In October each year, the University organizes, in cooperation with specialized centers, various activities around Breast Cancer and how to deal with it. This comes as part of the University’s efforts to contribute to the solutions of major health problems at both the national and international levels.
