Sero-Molecular Markers and Genetic Diversity of Hepatitis B Virus Isolated from Hemodialysis (HD) Patients from Jenin District, West Bank, Palestine

On 19 September 2025 ,  Dr. Abedelmajeed Nasereddin and Prof. Suheir Ereqat published a new study in Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology titled Sero-Molecular Markers and Genetic Diversity of Hepatitis B Virus Isolated from Hemodialysis (HD) Patients from Jenin District, West Bank, Palestine. The article aimed to investigate the prevalence of serological and molecular markers of HBV infection among HD patients attending HD units in Jenin governmental hospital, located in the northern West Bank, Palestine. In addition, complete genome sequencing was conducted to characterize the genetic diversity and determine the genotypes and sub genotypes of the isolated HBV strains. The results of this study demonstrated that HBV infection remains prevalent among HD patients, including both overt and occult forms. Genotype D, specifically Sub genotypes D1 and D3, predominates in the study population. The HBV S-region is a sufficient surrogate for population genetics investigations.
