Tracking the geographical origin of Plasmodium falciparum causing a rare severe case of malaria imported into Palestine, a zero-indigenous case area

On 18th September 2023, Dr. Suheir Ereqat and Dr. Abedelmajeed Nasereddin published a new study in BMC Infectious Diseases journal titled: Tracking the geographical origin of Plasmodium falciparum causing a rare severe case of malaria imported into Palestine, a zero-indigenous case area. The article aimed to investigate the geographical origin of a rare case of malaria imported into Palestine and tracking the causative pathogen using next-generation sequencing and population genetics. As a result, for this study, the combination of travel history together with signs and symptoms of malaria, followed by prompt diagnosis using conventional microscopic inspection of Giemsa-stained films together with molecular DNA tracking tools like msp-1 were key means in tracking the place of origin of infection in the case of travel to multiple destination.
