Abstract:

Aim: To determine treatments, materials and methods used for the pulp therapy and final restoration in deciduousteeth with irreversible pulp infection by the general dental practitioners in Palestine. Methods: An online questionnaire was issued to three hundred general practitioners who were randomly selectedfrom Palestinian dental association. This questionnaire included questions regarding treatment preferred for pulptherapy in deciduous teeth with irreversible pulp disease, materials used for the treatment and methods used for thesame. Results: Out of 300 practitioners, 246 participants responded to the survey with a response rate of 82%. Majority ofpractitioners i.e. 91.46% of the participants suggested pulpotomy as a first line of treatment. Other treatment modalitiesincluded extraction with a preference rate of 5.69% and pulpectomy with a preference rate of 0.81%. During pulpotomy83.33% preferred formocresol, while 15.45% preferred ferric sulfate and 1.22% of the respondents preferred usingboth materials. Conclusion: General dental practitioners are regularly performing pulp therapy procedures for the treatment ofdeciduous teeth while only 2% referred them to pedodontist. Also, the study reveals formocresol pulpotomy as themost preferred treatment for irreversibly damaged pulp in deciduous teeth. Whilst the clinical success of manyprimary tooth pulp treatments is reportedly high, studies often demonstrate a much lower proportion of teeth withradiographic signs of complete healing. This study reveals different methods and materials used to treat irreversiblepulp infection in deciduous teeth.
