Al-Quds University and Georgia Tech collaborate closely to make Palestine a ‘household name’ in scientific research

Georgia Tech academic research writing workshop expected to beget future initiatives

JERUSALEM  -  In its continuing mission to cultivate scientific research skills to promote Palestinian society and in its ongoing endeavors to contribute to world knowledge, Al-Quds University recently worked in tandem with the Georgia Institute of Technology to organize an intensive workshop on academic research writing that aimed to provide Palestinian participants with cultural principles utilized for a western audience, introduce new strategies on producing academic writing, and inject confidence into the students so as to professionalize their research writing skills.

In a highly competitive selection process, Al-Quds University beat out 80 universities when it was chosen by a fellowship jury to host international experts from Georgia Tech to present a workshop on academic research writing. President of Al-Quds University, Professor Imad Abu Kishek attributes this success to his university’s “outstanding recognition in academia and impeccable reputation in scientific research.”

Accordingly, research writing experts Professor Lauren Lukkarila and Professor Karen Tucker were dispatched by Georgia Tech to give the workshop.

“Al-Quds University is determined to be a leader in the field of scientific research locally, regionally, and internationally in order to contribute to solving the many problems facing humanity,” said Professor Abu Kishek, adding that the university had won six out of the ten grant proposals to do business with the Atlanta, Georgia-based university.  According to U.S. News & World Report, Georgia Tech has been among the top ten public American universities for more than 17 years.

According to Al-Quds University Dean of Scientific Research Dr. Elham Kateeb, the workshop, which was attended by dozens of researchers from Palestinian universities and was in participation with the Palestinian private sector, provided training to participants on how to read and understand research papers and how to improve students’ research abilities in order to be able to publish studies in leading international refereed journals.

“When our students implement into their researches the skills Georgia Tech has taught them, the amount of published works that emanates from Jerusalem aggrandizes and the name ‘Palestine’ becomes synonymous with excellent scientific researches and in turn becomes a household name,” Professor Abu Kishek emphasizes.

Al-Quds University Vice-President Dr. Hassan Dweik expressed his appreciation to Georgia Tech University and said that choosing to hold this workshop at Al-Quds University enhances scientific cooperation between the two universities.

Director of the Language Institute at Georgia Institute of Technology Professor Karen Tucker echoed the sentiments of Dr. Dweik, saying that cooperating with Al-Quds University would lead to future exchanges among academics and consequently promote scientific research at all levels.

Georgia Tech’s Dr. Lauren Lukkarila and Professor Karen Tucker both have years of experience providing workshops on academic writing to non-native English speakers. The workshop was part of the Zamalah (Fellowship) program for scholarships, the leadership of which was praised by Al-Quds University’s Vice President.  It was funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development in Kuwait under the direction of the Taawon Foundation and in partnership with the Bank of Palestine.

Al-Quds University intends to annually dispatch scientists from its different faculties to conduct scientific research in Health, Biology, and Humanities at leading international universities and research centers such as the University of Florida, the University of Granada, the University of Western Ontario, the German Center for Cancer Research in Heidelberg, Ryoko University in Japan, and L'Institut Pasteur du Maroc.

Al-Quds University is a research intensive university based in Jerusalem, Palestine.  Established in the late 70’s, Al-Quds remains the only Arab university in the city of Jerusalem. It currently offers 105 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, taught through its fifteen degree-granting faculties and institutes.
